Hello Families!
We’ve just completed our first weekend of classes - in addition to launching our after-school clubs during the week - and I am delighted to report that some of our classes were so well attended, that some adjustments had to be made. Now that we have a better idea of students’ learning abilities, we have adjusted our class offerings to provide a more productive learning environment for all. The biggest adjustment is that we will be running TWO intermediate classes simultaneously on Sundays.
Our new class list is as follows:
Saturday session at the Chinese Evangelical Free Church in Santa Barbara (might move to UCSB, will notify parents once we know for sure)
9:00 am - 10:25 am: Introduction to Mandarin 国语入门课 [AKA Words & Phrases Level 单词和短语阶段]
Sunday sessions at the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, UCSB
10:30 am - 11:55 am: Introduction to Mandarin 国语入门课 [AKA Words & Phrases Level 单词和短语阶段]
1:00 pm - 2:25 pm: Intermediate Entry Level with Pledge to Speak Only Mandarin 中级入门班 全程汉语 [AKA Sentences Level 认字造句阶段]
1:00 pm - 2:25 pm: Intermediate Mandarin with Pledge to Speak Only Mandarin in Class 中级班 全程汉语 [AKA Conversationalist Level 能说会道阶段]
2:30 pm - 3:55 pm: Advanced Level for the Proficient 高级班 全程汉语 [AKA Literati Level 文人阶段]
After this weekend, if we recommend a change in class placement, you will receive a call/email/text. Otherwise, I look forward to seeing you at your normal time!
For those who have tried out our classes and decided to continue joining us in the coming weeks, please complete your enrollment via our Enrollment Finalization Portal to avoid being waitlisted.
Chinese Club on Thursdays, 3:15 - 4:45pm, by Ellwood Bluffs
For those who are unable to attend our after-school or weekend classes, but wish to still get some Chinese-learning/speaking time in, please join us for Chinese Club! Enrollment is similar to the steps in our Enrollment portal, except your monthly donation is made through instructions on our Contribute page. Please contact Principal Jenny directly for specific location.
A few things to note:
I know that our parents are eager to audit the class to see how well their children are adjusting, which is why we have our TAs capturing tidbits of the sessions to share with our families during their time with our kids. We will have a shared photo album that will be sent to families who have finalized their enrollment with us.
On a similar note, to maximize our time with our students, please expedite drop off and “goodbyes” with your child(ren), and avoid lingering outside/inside the classroom. What we’ve noticed so far is that students perform exponentially better when parents are NOT within eyesight/earshot. Of course, exceptions are made when students require special attention from parents, but we’ve witnessed 100% of our students focus in the class, eagerly participate, and “light up” within minutes of the parents recusing themselves from the classroom. For those who could use the extra attention, our pre-trained TAs “big sisters, big brothers” are there to offer the additional one-on-one time, so not to worry!

我们刚刚结束了第一周的课程，并高兴地汇报：有些班级的报名情况好到需要做一些调整。我们对学生的学习情况有了更清晰的了解后，为了提供一个更有效的学习环境调整了课程安排。最大的变化是，我们将在周日同时开两个中级班。
我们的新课程安排如下：
周六课程（地点在圣塔芭芭拉的中国福音自由教会，可能会搬到 UCSB，确认后会通知家长）
9:00am - 10:25am：国语入门课 [也叫单词和短语阶段]
周日课程（地点在 UCSB 人文社会科学大楼）
10:30am - 11:55am：入门课 [强调单词和短语学习]
1:00pm - 2:25pm：全程说汉语的中级入门班 [认字造句阶段]
1:00pm - 2:25pm：全程说汉语的中级班 [能说会道阶段]
2:30pm - 3:55pm：全程说汉语的高级班 [文人阶段]
这个周末后，如果我们建议更换课程位置，我们会通过电话、邮件或短信跟您联系。如果没有其他通知，就按原计划来上课吧！
对于那些已经试过我们的课程并决定继续的同学，请通过我们的报名确认网页完成报名，以避免被列入候补名单。
中文俱乐部（周四，3:15pm - 4:45pm，地点在 Ellwood Bluffs附近）
如果你不能参加我们的课后或周末课程，但仍然想学中文，可以加入我们的中文俱乐部！报名步骤与我们的报名确认网页类似，只不过每月的捐款是通过我们捐赠页面上交的。具体地点请直接联系Jenny校长。
几点注意事项：
我们知道家长们很想了解孩子的上课情况，所以我们有助教会拍摄课堂片段，分享给大家。完成报名确认的家庭会在咱们新设的家长群里收到一个共享相册的链接。
为了充分利用与学生的时间，请尽量把孩子送到后避免在教室门内外逗留。我们发现，当家长不在视线或听觉范围内时，学生的表现会更出色。当然，如果学生需要特别的关注，我们已受培训的助教“大哥哥、大姐姐”们会提供额外的一对一辅导，所以不用担心！
