Santa Barbara Chinese School Relaunched!
SBCS was established in 1985, received NPO status in 2001, and maintained by parents with a burning desire to pass on their Chinese heritage to generations beyond.
Dear Santa Barbara Chinese-learning Community,
I’m a mother of two trilingual kids, and am truly honored to serve as the new Principal of Santa Barbara Chinese School. We started off speaking English at home and awkwardly transitioned to Cantonese for a while. After 7 months of preschool in Taipei, our kids are finally chatting with me in Mandarin too. Since returning to Santa Barbara, we’ve been actively trying to find language buddies to keep the momentum going. Will you come practice with us?
亲爱的圣巴巴拉中文学习社区的朋友们，
我是两个三语孩子的母亲，非常荣幸能够担任圣巴巴拉中文学校的新校长。我们家从讲英语开始，后来磕磕绊绊地过渡到了粤语。经过在台北的幼儿园学习了7个月后，我们的孩子们终于也能用普通话和我聊天了。自从回到圣巴巴拉以来，我们一直在积极寻找语言伙伴，以保持这种语言的连续性。你愿意加入我们一起练习吗？
Mom or Principal, my goals are simple: Create more opportunities for our very “American” children to speak/hear Chinese around town, and make learning this “superpower” fun. So, here’s what our team at SBCS has been working on since late February:
无论是作为母亲还是校长，我的目标都很简单：为我们这些“美国背景”的孩子创造更多在城镇中说/听中文的机会，并使学习这种“超能力”变得有趣。以下是自2月底以来我们SBCS团队一直在努力的事项：
Chinese Club 中文俱乐部: This is our way to not only build community, but also to bridge the gap between zero beginners and heritage speakers. This informal “Chinese Playtime / Activities / Conversation Table” is an office hour equivalent, where more advanced students can get extra help, and those with little or no background in Chinese can find an outlet - or a few buddies - to get them started. For just the month of May, we are piloting a soft launch to make Wednesday afternoons available for kids to speak/hear Mandarin. Our member families also get to hang out once a month at various venues around town in both English and Chinese. For more info and to sign up, please complete this form ASAP. The first session is in 2 days (May 1). There are only 2 spots left!
中文俱乐部：这不仅是建立社区的方式，也是连接零基础学习者和传统学习者的桥梁。这种非正式的“中文游戏/活动/对话桌”相当于课后辅导/答疑时间，让水平较高的学生可以得到额外的帮助，而那些几乎没有中文背景的学生可以找到一个出口——或者几个伙伴——来开始他们的学习之旅。5月份，我们将试行在周三下午开放，以供孩子们说/听普通话。我们的会员家庭每月还可以在城镇的各种场所聚会，使用英语和中文交流。更多信息和报名，请尽快填写此表格。第一次会议将在两天后（5月1日）举行，目前仅剩2个名额！

After-school programs: We have been talking to several notable local elementary schools to offer an hour of “Intro to Mandarin 中文入门课” weekly, starting in the Fall. If you’re at Isla Vista Elementary, be sure to sign up for the “After School Enrichment” on Mondays next term!

Teacher recruitment 教师招聘: We are actively interviewing prospective Chinese (Mandarin, Cantonese, etc.) instructors in preparation for more private group session requests (4 students minimum), and for all that is to come. If you or somebody you know should be on our team, please apply here.
教师招聘：我们正在积极面试潜在的中文（普通话、粤语等）教师，以备不时之需，同时也为未来的私人小组课程（至少4名学生）做准备。如果你或你认识的人适合加入我们的团队，请在这里申请。
Local Partnerships 当地的合作伙伴: This is predominantly for summer camps and family excursions around town. The city of Santa Barbara IS our classroom..and there are so many wonderful museums, outdoor spaces, and hidden gems to choose from! Stay tuned via this newsletter, and we will continue to add our local Partners to our website as they are firmed up.

Partnership with UCSB 大学合作: We have reignited our partnership with UCSB’s Chinese Language Program, and other relevant Departments on campus, to recruit student assistants and volunteers. Expect more excursions on campus as well!

How can you get involved? From the very beginning of SBCS, we’ve relied on our volunteers, who have generously donated their time - and funds - to ensure the success of our programs. That continues to hold true today!
